Pat Tillman, a graduate of Leland High School in San Jose, enlisted in 2002 and succeeded in joining the Army Rangers, an elite strike force which has some units hunting for al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in southeastern Afghanistan.
Tillman, who walked away from a three-year, $3.6 million contract offer from the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army in 2002, was killed April 22 in an ambush near the Afghan-Pakistani border.
